Kindly fill up the Form I providing appropriate information and sign the declaration (Form II) regarding handling of the biological material. On receipt of this, the material you are seeking will be provided. This information may be sent to the funding agencies, if needed, otherwise will be kept confidential.

Form A: Tissue Request Forms (Form l & ll )
Form B : Material Transfer Agreement Form

  • Both need to be filled up.
  • Read important guidelines below.

  1. The material will be provided depending on availability of the precious human nervous tissue of your specification.
  2. The user has to make arrangement for collection of material from the Brain Bank and transport appropriately, at their cost
  3. All attempts will be made to provide fairly standardised, good material for research. HBTR (Brain Bank) is not responsible for any deterioration of the material, after it has been collected.
  4. The material is provided free of cost and it cannot be used for any commercial purposes.
  5. Any part/ form of the material cannot be sent out side the country and it is prohibited.
  6. Any part/form of the material may be shared with other neuroscientists in India, on intimation to the HBTR, to update the user Directory and to record the research work emanated from the material provided.
  7. The material provided is exclusively for research purposes and not for any clinical use. In order to continue to provide human material for research to you / your team, to plan the funding and evolve technical strategies, you are required to complete and return Forms I and II with complete information.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TISSUE/TISSUE FLUID PROVIDED BY HBTR
(HUMAN BRAIN BANK – NIMHANS)

The HBTR – (Brain Bank – NIMHANS) requests that users acknowledge work undertaken in collecting, storing, processing and making available brain tissue to researchers in any publication or technical reports. The acknowledgement should take the form of reference to – “Human Brain Tissue Repository for Neurobiological Studies, Dept. of Neuropathology, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore 560 029, India”

A copy of the reprints, abstracts presented at Conferences and technical reports should be sent to:

Dr.S.K. Shankar, MD.
Principal Co-Ordinator
Human Brain Bank
NIMHANS, Bangalore 560029, India.

This will give us the impetus to continue the work to promote neurosciences in India and also justify future funding for continued Brain Bank activities at this center. Future funding for continued Brain Bank activities depend on your co-operation and inputs. Your constructive and pragmatic comments and suggestions are happily solicited.

DECLARATION OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR HANDLING HUMAN BRAIN TISSUE / TISSUE FLUID.

Human Brain Tissue Repository (With Special emphasis on Pathological States) has been established as a resource organisation to procure precious human nervous tissue for neurobiological research in the country. The material is collected at postmortem, with informed consent of the close relatives.

The material is exclusively for research use. It is not useful for transplantation purposes.

As you know, the possible health hazard of handling postmortem brain tissue has been a cause of anxiety for some time. In some of the disorders of nervous system there is clear evidence of an association with infectious agents; in others the evidence is still controversial. The debate regarding the most appropriate methods of handling such tissue in the laboratory is still continuing.

While providing the fresh nervous tissue to researchers, it is made clear that;

(i) The material provided may be hazardous to health

(ii) It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the safety precautions are followed like wearing gloves and facial mask while handing the human material, have adequate equipment to process the material and ensure proper disposal and disinfection promptly. Treat it as potentially Bio-Hazard material.

(iii) Human Brain Tissue Repository (HBTR-NIMHANS) provides the material for research purposes and only on the express understanding that the staffs of HBTR and National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore do not accept any responsibility for damage, injury or death arising from the use of such tissue however they may be caused.

(iv) Do not use the material until a certificate is provided regarding negative status for viral infections like HIV & HBSAg. Please do remember to collect it.
