Human Brain Tissue Repository (HBTR) has been established as a resource organisation to procure precious human nervous tissue for neurobiological research in the country.

The material is collected at postmortem, with informed consent of the close relatives.

The material is exclusively for research use. It is not useful for transplantation purposes.

Objectives of the National Research Facility

The Human Brain Tissue Repository was established with the following mandate

Collect and Store

Standardize and develop technology for collection and storage of human brain specimens for histomorphological, cytochemical and biochemical studies. They include specimens from infective, degenerative and neoplastic diseases of the nervous system – (work in progress).

Tissue Fluid Bank

To develop a ‘Tissue Fluid Bank’ of serum and CSF and other body fluids from various infectious and non-infectious neurological disorders. This material will be used to develop baseline parameters in health and evolve ‘biomarkers’ for various diseases and diagnostic kits – (in progress).(Blood samples are stored frozen for molecular genetic studies)

DNA / RNA Bank

To evolve DNA / RNA bank from the peripheral tissue in case of neurodegenerative disorders to develop probes for molecular biological studies – (in progress).

The Human Brain Tissue Repository has actively collaborated with various national research groups and provided precious human material for research purposes free of cost. Using the material, several novel observations related to brain pathology have been made, thus establishing the importance of HBTR for neuroscience research in the country.
